Mapping Journeys

Fri, 19th June, 2015 from 9:00 AM, in Awliscombe

This will be a whole day creative event building on the theme of ‘mapping journeys’ – both physical and metaphysical -using our own notions of journeys to recall/chart/navigate. We will be guided by artist Val Davies, who will help us to explore our own journeys and turn them into maps. Val will also be bringing and sharing some of her own amazing work. It is going to be something of a creative double-act and we will continue working some of the threads that we have been exploring on and off over the years:

  • Starting and continuing to build creative resourcefulness
  • Crafting richer conversations with clients and ourselves
  • Systemic constellation work – seeing ourselves (and clients) in the systems they live in (family, organisations, teams)
  • Using the ideas of journey and legacy to create strong narratives and direction (for self and clients)

Val Davies: left school aged 14 with no qualifications. She trained as a dental nurse and much later, after 11 years as a laboratory appliance technician for Exeter’s Chiropody Service, decided that being a ‘maker’ was a great way to earn a living but she needed more artistic freedom. Five years later with a Combined Arts Degree in her pocket, her life as a textile artist began. The threads that run through her work revolve around personal memory, memories and memory loss. Memory recall, which has always been a challenge, led her to find visual ways to record her thoughts, journeys and experiences – so began her current artwork based around mapmaking. Val is also a volunteer in Seaward House at The Mede – a day facility for people with dementia.
